A Case of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Developing Steroid Psychosis During High Dose Cortisone Therapy




Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by rnultisystem involvement. Cortisone, used on the treatment of SLE, may be produced a wide variety of mental disturbance, resulting apparently from their direct effect
upon
the
central nervous system, although the precise pathogenetic mechanisms are not yet determined.
The authors experienced a case of SLE who is 21-year old woman and had taken high dose cortisone. Therefore she developed steroid psychosis of significant mental changes, such as insomnia and strangeness in awareness of body image. After
discontinuance
of cortisone with psychiatric managements, she subsequently became recovered normal mentality.
